On 10th November 2021, Ambassador Opunimi Akinkugbe was warmly received by Greece’s dynamic Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Nikos Dendias and some members of his team including Ambassador Vasiliki Gounari who heads the A8 Directorate for Sub Saharan Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Discussions were most fruitful regarding Greece-Nigeria bilateral relations and we look forward to receiving Minister Dendias in Nigeria in January 2022.
Greece’s increased engagement with Nigeria will further cement the old ties of some visionary entrepreneurs that took a bet on Nigeria 60-70 years ago; these include AG Leventis, George Coumantaros, (Flour Mills), John Basil Mandilas, Paterson Zochonis. Greek-owned ships and tankers play a significant role in transporting Nigeria’s oil and gas. The African continent is an important part of the Greek government’s National Strategic Extroversion Plan.
