Dear Friends,
In my first celebration of the New Year in Athens since I took up my role as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic last June, as we reflect on the past year, we are full of optimism about 2022 and the promise that it holds.
We have just come through a year that tested the depth of our resilience as people of a troubled world. The coronavirus pandemic continues to rage even after two years and its impact on lives and livelihoods has been overwhelming. Our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones during these challenging times. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
The longstanding history and presence in Nigeria of Greek entrepreneurship act as a bridge of cooperation between our two countries. With that strong foundation of close ties established by great Greek visioners, we see enormous potential for economic cooperation in various areas of our multi-faceted relationship. This encompasses education, agriculture, aquaculture, manufacturing, renewable energy, shipping etc.
The successful hosting of the annual Greek Nigerian Chamber of Commerce and Technology (GNCCT) Investment summit in partnership with our mission, highlighted the interest and possibilities for collaboration for our mutual benefit.
2022 gets off to a flying start for Nigeria and Greece, as we look forward to receiving Greek Foreign Minister H.E. Nikos Dendias in Nigeria this January. The first visit by a Greek Foreign Minister, it will certainly boost the momentum for a deepening of our bilateral, economic, cultural and political ties.
I thank our team at the Nigerian Embassy in Athens for their service and hard work. On behalf of us all, I extend our best wishes to Nigerians in Greece, at home and in diaspora, as well as the government and good people of the Hellenic Republic for good health, peace, and progress this new year.
Stay well and stay safe.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Ambassador Opunimi Akinkugbe
